Fulham Football Club, one of the capital's most historic and well-loved
teams, moved to the famous Craven Cottage ground in 1896. Two years later,
the club gained entry to the Second Division of the Southern League, and
Fulham's Number Ones is the first book to concentrate on the goalkeepers who
have served since that first Southern League season.
Every goalkeeper without exception is profiled in one of these three
categories:
Fulham's Finest: An Alphabetical Guide to Fulham's Greatest Keepers,
including long-serving Ernie Beecham, Maltese Falcon Tony Macedo and the
erratic but entertaining Peter Mellor.
They Also Served: A Chronological Guide to Keepers Who Made 10 or more
Fulham Appearances.
Passing Through: A Chronological Guide to Keepers Who Made Less Than Ten
Appearances For Fulham.
The text is lively and readable, and includes interviews with keepers still
alive, first-hand eyewitness material and, where relevant, press reports.
Stattos will welcome the inclusion of comprehensive appearance records for
each keeper, plus a comparison of their effectiveness. There are also
photographs of stand-in keepers (before the age of substitutes, even striker
Malcolm Macdonald wore the green jersey).
Author Chris Mason, a former librarian, is a Fulham fan of almost half a
century's standing, and was brought up near the famous Craven Cottage
ground. He is widely recognised as an authority on the club.
Artist Bob Armsby, who was specially commissioned to draw caricatures of
many of the keepers, was like Mason a regular contributor to the Fulham
official matchday programme.
